Half of Christians are Muslims
Let me walk you through a torturous chain of reasoning. Ignore the statistics and made-up facts; my purpose will become clear in a moment.
- Under the heading ‘theist’, we can place anybody who believes in God.
- Christians and Muslims (and Jews and many others) fall under that heading.
- Half of all theists are Muslims.
- Therefore, half of all Christians are Muslims.
There’s something missing, isn’t there? The confusion you’re probably feeling right now is similar to the confusion I felt upon reading the latest delusional missive from Americans for Truth About Homosexuality, an extraordinarily bigoted organization run by Peter LaBarbera. It bears the amazing title of ‘Half of Homosexuals are Bisexual: Homosexual Newspaper’, and consists entirely of a few quoted paragraphs from the 2009 LGBT National Health Summit website followed by a bizarre comment from AFTAH. Here’s the first part of the Health Summit material:
The day began with an overview of the current research on bisexual health. Research shows that bisexual people — who make up about half of those who identify as GLB [Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual] — face huge health disparities. …
[’Bisexual health researcher’ Cheryl] Dobinson and others said that stigma and biphobia certainly play a large role in why this population is impacted by certain health disparities at even higher rates than gays and lesbians.
The bold font was in the original, and is apparently meant to highlight the shocking revelation that half of all gay, lesbian and bisexual people are bisexual. It’s then followed by the slightest ominous line ‘more coming on this story’.
I’m assuming that whatever monumental stupidity went into the creation of that title (No, AFTAH, half of GLBTs are bisexual, not half of homsoexuals – that makes no sense) also went into making the whole post damn near incomprehensible. What more is there to say about this? Why is it worth highlighting the fact that half of GLBTs are bisexual? Can anybody explain this to me?
